St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger...

Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.

Review - No Spoilers
Some of you may know that I originally hated this book when I first started this book last year.

"My friend and I tried to read it but unfortunately got bored and stopped reading it. I found it a bit too confusing and I didn't exactly like the main character Rose. She seemed to cocky for my liking" - My original comment on goodreads!

How wrong I was hahaha!!! It's funny how a second experience can completely change your opinion.

Our main character - Rose - is extremely cocky and arrogant throughout the novel. This was the main reason why I stopped but this time round I found it sort of refreshing. Most protagonists are insecure and have that best friend that always steals the lime light. Well the roles completely flipped and that's why I loved it so much. Rose was so sure and DAYUM WAS SHE BADASS! She knew how to take care of herself and she protected her friend Lissa well. She took no sh*t from anyone and was the most sarcastic and sassiest character you'll ever read. She had the best lines and I wish I had her quick wit.

“That is my dress," I admitted. I kept staring at it, wanting it so badly that it ached in my chest.
This was the kind of dress that changed the world. The kind of dress that started religions.”

Lissa was a very caring character that had many bad things happen to her. She's compassionate by nature but when things take a turn for the worse she struggles to maintain this perfect exterior. Lissa is the exact opposite to Rose, so the contrast between both characters was perfect. They were both bad and good role models for each other. Lissa is meant to be the same age as Rose (17 or 18) but sometimes her character comes across as childish because she's constantly being protected by rose but by the end of the novel she'd grown as a character so the character development was perfect for both of them.

There are three types of vampires in this book. The Strigoi who're made by another vampire and are actually dead. They don't have any remorse or mercy and they hunt Moroi which are the royals. Moroi blood makes them physically stronger and basically unstoppable. But to help the Moroi from completely dying out they have the Dhampir's who are their guardians. Rose's job is to protect Lissa and train to be her guardian once she's older but problems unfold and a hidden threat becomes known.

This book is very confusing at the start with all this vampire type business but once you keep reading on it all makes sense and you fall in love with the characters. I fell in love with the plot and I was just waiting for the big reveal at the end. I was taken by complete surprise and I never thought the person who'd made the threats would be them.

Even with this all going on you still get that high-school edge and with it comes with the normal high school drama. The amount that happens in this book is crazy and there is never a dull moment. The Romance...oh the romance. Without giving away anything I'm just going to say I ship both Lissa and Rose's pairing so hard...

I'm so glad I decided to give this novel a second chance and I am SO excited for the movie. I'm not too sure whether it will turn out well but I guess I'm always nervous about book to movie adaptations. For the people who make this movie, I hope for your sake you don't stuff it up because this is a relatively big fandom. This book was perfect and I loved it and it was the reason I got no sleep on a Sunday night! But hey, you know it's a good book when it's keeping you up.

  3. I actually loved Rose's cockiness, lol! She was totally badass. Lissa, though? She freaking bored me to death. I'm really glad you gave this one another chance and loved it, Francoise! Trust me, the following books get even better. ;)
